KEYNOTE INTERVIEW: WILLIAM FOWLER AND RICHARD HESLOP IN CONVERSATION

William Fowler, Curator of Artists’ Moving Image at the BFI National Archive, discusses the aesthetics of the music video after punk through the lens of artist and filmmaker Richard Heslop’s career. Heslop has worked as a cameraman and co-collaborator on several films by Derek Jarman, including The Garden, The Last of England and The Smiths’ video The Queen is Dead. He then went on to make many music videos with bands including the Happy Mondays, New Order, 23 Skidoo, The Shamen, The Cure, Sinead O’Connor, Queen and Paul McCartney, and has made several award-winning short films and dramas with the BBC. He recently made a feature film called Frank and completed a 45-minute film called Raft of The Medusa for the Arts Council and the BBC, written by Simon Armitage.
